Many people are filing lawsuits against the manufacturer of Taxotere, Sanofi-Aventis, because they failed to warn patients and the medical community about the risk of permanent baldness from taking Taxotere.
While temporary hair loss is a common side effect of breast cancer chemotherapy, permanent hair loss is not. Sanofi had prior knowledge through their own in-house studies that there was a 10% chance that their drug would cause permanent hair loss, not just temporary hair loss. In spite of this knowledge they failed to timely warn the public in the United States that this permanent hair loss was a possibility even though they had previously warned in Canada and Europe through a labeling process. The disfigurement of permanent hair loss is an unacceptable side effect when the patient has no idea that this is a possible outcome of taking the drug.
